Space Traveler Reveals Mental Health Struggle After Wave of Harassment After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also featured well-known figures.

The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, recalling a check-in call from a mission companion in the days following the landing.

She described the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and operated research during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her studies and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her heritage – was overshadowed under the avalanche of gendered attacks.

She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after an attack during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the followers whose kindness pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.

She added that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had come out of the experience, such as spotlight on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

About the Mission

The self-operating spacecraft departed its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that passed the Kármán line of space.

The group of women also included accomplished professionals from different industries.

The enterprise behind the flight is a private space firm founded by a well-known tech mogul.
