Individuals Coming Off Slimming Injections Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that people who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing such medications must be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a return to original mass within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Doctors propose the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened regain.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Experiences

People who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
