Elite Athletes Call on Iranian Authorities to Stop Death Sentence of Boxing Champion
Over twenty Olympic medallists, mentors and other global sports figures have signed a statement urging a halt to the death penalty of a boxing titleholder and instructor, who is on death row in the country.
Escalating Global Anger
Amidst increasing international outrage over the nation's escalating use of the death penalty as a tool of repression, the forcefully phrased statement censures the authorities's verdict to uphold the death sentence of the boxing champion.
The boxer, three decades old, from Mashhad in the northern province, was taken into custody for being involved in countrywide demonstrations in two thousand nineteen and charged of supporting an opposition group.
