A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's major government projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” stated the national leader.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term finished the year before. This project was intimately linked to his administration's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, defying forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised persistent apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party called for an immediate suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This halt was proposed until the completion of a full technical review. The party declared that the situation "requires prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in total compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
